Cat stressed out from new kitten

It's been 3 weeks now since we got a 5 month old kitten as a friend for our 7 year old cat. 1.5 weeks in our cat (resident) needed emergency surgery for a blockage. She had eaten a bunch of strings that she normally wouldn't. The vet said to give it some more time they may still get along and the blockage may have been from something else. Today she ripped out a huge chunk of fur from the back of her neck. To the point where it is red and almost bloody. The resident cat hisses at the kitten sometimes but they also rub noses and sometimes sleep near each other. We slowly introduced them over a week and we have been keeping them separate at night and when we go out. We've had to hide the resident cats food when the kitten is out in her area (otherwise the kitten will eat it). We have also tried the feliway defuser after the vets recommendation.

Is it too soon to think about rehoming the kitten? Is there a chance she might become less stressed?

Thanks in advance.
