I adopted a cat that is used to being outdoors. How do I train him to come back home when let out?

I’ve had a cat that would come back nightly, and another cat that would always stay in the yard, but never trained them or grew up with them. My cat is unfortunately not microchipped, and I’ve read that break-away collars are needed, which means he could be lost forever. My city also has a higher than avg number of coyotes and I hear about animal attacks regularly. I’ve heard to many stores of cats finding their way back home. I was also told he may have only been “kicked” out of the house at night because the “man of the house” was quite a DB. I just don’t want to keep him in if he wants freedom. I’ve had him for two weeks now :)
