I may have gotten it all wrong — did I trust the people at the store too much about Cat care?

I recently got a 3-month old Persian kitten, and I immediately jumped to the pet store near me to buy the essentials.

The kitten was from my boyfriend’s relative who decided she cannot care for the kitten anymore and sold him to my boyfriend and gave it to me because I’ve always wanted a cat.

Anyway, I went to the pet store and basically told the salespeople I’m a new owner and needed advice. Along with the litter, litter box, food bowl, and bed, this is what he told me:

  • Whiskas Wet Food is their best seller and told me I should feed it to my kitten instead of dry food.
  • Talked me into buying Milk for cats because a 3-month old kitten still needs it.
  • Talked me out of buying Dry food because moisture is important and I will have to soak dry food in water for about 30 minutes first.
  • I can start cooking for my kitten, just boil a chicken and add liver.

I have done my research, but most of what he said just didn’t add up to what other pet owners would generally advice a new pet owner. Such as, cooking your own food will be a bit more difficult because you need to balance all the nutrients — not just simply throw in a chicken and liver and boil it.

My friends are dog owners. I tried asking them as well, but they have no idea how cats work. Thank you!

EDIT: I’ve only had him for 3 days, so I hope I have not yet done much damage in terms of feeding. I am still waiting for my paycheck to take him to the vet.
