My cat ate yarn and she pooped it out less than 24 hours later
I am writing this because last night my 6 month old cat swallowed about a foot of yarn and the internet convinced me she was going to die.
I was not 100% sure she ate it but I was 99% sure cause there was a piece of yarn with one end that was clearly ripped off by her. To make matters worse the other end of the yarn had a loop at the end of it, as in the yarn itself was tied with a knot with a little circle.
I looked online and every so many posts said “take her to the vet immediately!” Or “call the vet!”
But so many posts that did call the vet said the vet told them to 1) check under the cat’s tongue to make sure the string is not caught around the tongue And 2) monitor the cats poop and make sure the cat is not showing any signs of illness like vomiting, lethargy, or loss of appetite.
Considering it was 9pm, I don’t have the money for an emergency vet visit, and my cat seemed okay (no string under tongue, no vomiting, running around as usual, still had her appetite, and just took a poop) I decided to wait it out. I told myself, “if she doesn’t poop tomorrow or starts acting sick I will take her to the vet”
BUT I was still super guilty and convince I was a horrible cat owner and going to be the reason my cat died.
I came across one post that put my mind at ease. Someone who claimed they were a vet said “90% of the time a string passes uneventfully. The two places a string can get caught is around the tongue and in the stomach. You can check the tongue, but you won’t know that it got stuck in the stomach until the cat gets sick. If you look under the tongue and there is nothing there you’ve eliminated 50% of the places it could get stuck.”
So flash forward to this morning.
My cat eats like normal, a bit of wet food and some dry... she seems okay still.
She takes her usual morning poop and there’s nothing in it. (I checked 🤮)
I felt anxious still, but she still seems okay and wasn’t constipated. So I felt better.
Then at around 5pm, about 20 hours after I think she ate the yarn she poops and there I see what’s clearly blue yarn.
But that wasn’t enough... I had to make sure that it was the whole thing to be 100% sure she was fine.
So I put the yarn poop in her scooper and put it under some water... sure enough the right amount of yarn loop and all was accounted for 😁
Never will I ever leave yarn out again, but I hope this helps some loving cat owner who is falling down that crazy rabbit hole of the internet right now.
TLDR: My cat ate a foot of yarn, wasn’t showing any signs of illness so I decided to wait it out instead of going to the vet, 20 hours later she pooped the whole thing out.
