My dog won’t settle in crate post surgery. Advice please.

So, my roughly ten year old dog, Bowie, (he’s a rescue so not sure on exact age) will not settle in his cage anymore.

He broke his front leg a couple of weeks ago and had surgery with plates inserted. He was on strong pain killers given to him via drip at the vets and since getting home 5 days ago has been on tramadol as well as a lighter painkiller which I believe is more targeted at the swelling around the break rather than aiming to dull the pain.

Since he finished his tramadol yesterday he has not been enjoying his crate, apart from when we go to bed the crate door is left open so he can lay outside it, he has a toy, some water and his usual bed and blankets inside the crate.

Last night he was screaming and crying when the crate got locked up(we do this 10/20 minutes before going to bed so it’s not a shock for us to lock him then leave, he even gets a couple of biscuits at the same time). The screaming was so loud it woke me up and I ran downstairs thinking he had possibly trapped his foot in the crate(mum and dad were still up about to be going to bed).

I’ve tried putting a blanket over the crate and also putting some biscuits in to encourage him to go in naturally throughout the day today, but he has been refusing even with the crate door being left open.

Since the tramadol has worn off he’s more aware of what’s going on and is becoming stubborn, not wanting to lie in his crate bed and generally wondering around the house when obviously we need him to be resting. Since he’s wondering about the problem is he is needing crated up throughout the day for a little while but again, he is screaming in a way I’ve never heard him before.

We done the introducing to the cage slowly as he’s never had one before and he’s shown no signs of being bothered about being in it until last night. He’s a dog who is generally unbothered about most things to be honest e.g fireworks, strangers, the door knocking, so I’m a bit surprised at how much and how actively he is against the crate.

Most advice surrounding crates I’ve came across is more targeted at puppy crate training which isn’t quite relevant.

Please help me get Bowie boy settled so he can rest his injury!!
