Our cat pooped himself in his sleep...

10-year old male neutered tabby. perfectly healthy, just had his check up a month ago. blood work was great, weight is a bit high but dropping under close supervision from our vet and 2lbs away from normal weight (21lbs down to 14lbs now, vet is aiming for 12lb). he eats vet-prescribed kibble ONLY (no wet food, no treats, and no human food - besides the odd crumb he picks up off the floor).

today my partner was home and the cat was sleeping in his cat bed by the window. my bf went to pet him and noticed that he had...pooped himself? this a gross description but there were about 4-5 runny lumps about the size of a grain of rice each on his bed, and my bf wiped a considerable amount off his bum when he cleaned him up.

aside from being annoyed at being cleaned up, the cat didn't seem to mind one bit, and went about his business. he's fine now, sleeping next to me, eating and drinking normally. he has never had issues like this before.

any idea why/how this happened?
