I recently adopted another cat to have a total of two in the apartment. She has adjusted well, and her and my cat are currently getting along fine w/ minor hissing and swiping occasionally. Otherwise they are usually right next to eachother.
Anyways, the new cat does NOT use the scratching posts I have around, and instead go for the couch and recliner. I have caught her doing this and I make a "hey!" or "hiss" sound, but nothing helps. I got cat nip herb and spread it around the scratching posts. I got cat nip spray and sprayed it on the scratching posts. Still goes for the couch and recliner.
I don't know if she will grow out of it, if there is anything I can do...but at this rate my recliner already has markings and my couch is warrantied but....its just best to not have this going on. My other cat never had this problem. Maybe she is overwhelmed? Maybe needs her own scratching post....but I already have four (1 horizontal cardboard in a balltrack, 3 unique cat trees/perches with one is slanted) and they are all scattered around the apartment.
