Sudden Aggression

Hi Reddit!

I posted a few days ago about how I was going to be fostering a dog with my boyfriend's family for awhile. Good news: we got her, and she's a very sweet little dog. Bad news: she shows signs of aggression sometimes, and we're not sure what to do about it.

The dog, Holly, is about one year old and she's been in and out of foster homes and boarding. Over all, she's very well-behaved and likes people a lot, but she's also easily startled. His parents have a maid. and whenever he walks into a room, she barks a little and gets nervous. Yesterday, while my boyfriend's mom was sleeping, the maid walked in and Holly immediately started barking/snarling and tried to rush him (but I was able to grab her collar). This made me think that she was being protective of my boyfriend's mom, as she'd been sleeping. Then, this morning, my boyfriend woke up first and let her outside and fed her. After a few minutes she came back to our room to sit in bed with me while I was trying to wake up. My boyfriend came upstairs, while calling for the dog, and when he entered the room she started barking/snarling again and rushed him. I wasn't able to grab her as quickly this time, and she tried to snip at him. Once again, I think she was being protective over me as I was sleeping/vulnerable.

We're concerned with this behavior, obviously, because we don't want her to attack anyone. We also don't want to have to give her back to the rescue org that we fostered her from, but if this continues to be an issue, I'm not sure if we will all continue to be on the same page about keeping her. The rescue told us that she was non-aggressive, and for the most part they were right! She's very playful and likes to cuddle, and she has never shown signs of aggression to me or my BF's mom, but she is much more reserved and borderline hostile around men.

Anyone else run into similar issues/have possible solutions?
