Terrified of my new cat

So after a few years of moving around and just waiting to get a cat, I finally got one on Friday. He was super sweet at the shelter, and I was so excited to have finally found “the one”. I bring him home, and he slinks under the bed (no surprise). I decide just to chill out in the other side of the room as him, and eventually he walks over purring to me and sits on my lap. I let him sniff my hand and have him a few scratches, but wanted to go slow. A few minutes later, he gets this weird look on his face, looks up at me, and bit me on my face hard. Like hard enough to draw blood and leave a two inch scratch. I went to the doctor and let him cool off a bit. When I came home that night, the same thing happened, but I managed to stand up and he only kind of bit me on the leg. Today I’ve mostly let him alone, but he’ll always walk over to me and butt his head against my leg when I walk into the room. He’s given me this strange look a couple more times today and I quickly leave the room. Long story short: I’m terrified of this cat. I grew up with cats, and one of my roommates had cats in college, but I’ve never had one be so outwardly aggressive towards me multiple times. What should I do? I want this cat to have a great family, but at this point I’m so scared of him that I want nothing to do with him. I know shelter cats take time to adjust (he’s 5yo, came in as a stray but the shelter thinks his previous owners abandoned him since he was spayed and in pretty good shape) but I don’t know if I can deal with this
