How hard should I scratch my cat?

Just reading that back sounds crazy.

When I stroke my cat, a chunky Maine coon, he will lean all his weight into my hand and move his head seemingly to where he wants to be stroked - typically his jaw/chin or around his ears.

Normally my nails are quite short so it’s just stroking but they’ve grown beyond the tip of my fingers so it’s a bit more like scratching than stroking and today as he positioned his head he started purring more than usual and louder as I scratched harder.

I don’t think I scratched hard enough to do any harm but is there any issues with relative roughly scratching the cat or are there any issues I might not have thought have to explain why he is so keen (no sores, injuries or fleas around the areas) ?
