One cat who can’t get along

We have five cats. Four are siblings that we found outside, and one is a cat that my brother got from a shelter. The shelter cat came into the house about a year before the others, and the rest arrived in a clump (since they were all from the same litter) about two years ago.

We’ve done everything we can to help the cats to get along. We introduced them to each other gradually and kept them separated for a long time. We used pheromone plug ins, made sure that there were plenty of litter boxes for everyone (we have seven currently), and have shelter cat sleep and be fed dinner in a separate place so that she can feel that her independence is being maintained. She also has a private litter box, but she has always insisted on using the communal litter boxes and hardly touches her own. We are also very vigilant about keeping the litter boxes clean and appealing- we clean them several times a day.

Despite these efforts, shelter cat had had problems on and off with peeing around the house, and she’s recently relapsed. We have been finding blankets and clothes around the house with big urine marks on them. Today my brother climbed into his bed and found a large wet patch that had totally permeated all the bed layers- we had to strip the whole bed and wash everything.

We have made an appointment for shelter cat to get checked out by a vet in case she has a UTI or other health problem, but it seems pretty likely that she’s “making a statement”. We want to take care of her and keep our commitment to home her, but we also don’t want our stuff ruined, and we’re worried about her influencing the other cats to start acting the same way.

Does anyone have be any suggestions?
