Hello!!
So we have a 1.5 year old black lab mix who began limping on Thursday, by Saturday he was off his hind back leg completely. We noticed swelling around one of the middle toes and thought it was a break. He was not whining or in any obvious pain, the only sign was the limping. Took him to the vet today, got x-rays and it was in fact broken.
They didn't really discuss the results of the x-ray with us, just kind of told us it needed a splint. When we came to pick him up they gave us ibuprofen and a tranquilizer sedative but didn't really explain them much to us just when to give them.
They put him out completely with anesthesia to get the x-rays, which we thought was very weird. Is this normal? Why would they not have just given him a mild sedative?
Then they splinted his toe, but the splint comes all the way up his back hind leg. His whole back leg is basically immobile. This seemed odd to us too..
I'm not really sure but we both feel uneasy about the care they provided and slightly ripped off. We paid a total of 600 for them to drug our dog up and splint him. And I know vets obviously are not cheap, but we just both aren't really happy with the experience.
If anyone has any thoughts on this situation it may help ease us. At this point we feel like we put our little guy through extra trauma of being sedated with anesthesia for no reason. Is this and the splinting common practice? Or has something similar has happened to anyone else and their pet?
