When do you know it’s time for a pet to be euthanized?

Hey folks,

My girlfriend has a 19yo cat who is a real lovable guy. He will hang out with us, sleep with us, and really most of the time he’s okay. However, about 2 months ago, he started having this issue where he will yowl for a bit. And then every other time or so it seems like a stroke or blood clot, he will become disoriented. He’s clearly in a lot of pain. He sometimes loses control of body fluids. He sometimes can’t walk, breathing becomes fast.

This repeating situation is pretty traumatic for us, and I’m sure the cat as well. It feels like you’re watching him die, but it has happened several times now. Then within a few hours, he’s fine.

She has taken him to the vet. They said he’s in good shape for 19, but probably has a heart condition and gave us some medicine for pain and heart. It seemed better for a while, but it’s still happening same as before. Of course, we could take him to the vet every time it happens, but sincerely, we’re just not the type to want to spend a fortune keeping a 19yo cat, who is in pain, on life support.

The hardest part is that when it’s not happening, he’s fine, mostly. He throws up every now and again, he has accidents outside the litter box fairly often. But it’s not so chronic that it’s unmanageable, it only mildly interferes with our quality of life. And he will jump on the couch and lay with us, communicate to us, and so on.

The question for us is when we should consider to euthanize him? I think if we had a child around, it would be traumatizing for a child to see a cat live like this. We even become emotional when it happens. And it’s high tension, scary. I would think that it would be worth it to protect a child from seeing such a stressful thing. But it’s just us, i suppose we are more resilient, but it’s still hard.

It’s such a hard decision. He’s a happy cat 95% of the time. And this 5% is very tough for us. I guess it seems that, otherwise, he will continue living like this. And it’s a little frustrating for us, because we know it’s going to continue happening if not get worse. We don’t want to see him like this, but we do want to see him when he’s happy, and he is, quite often! It’s very confusing. And it’s hard to say what he would want, so here I am to ask you all!

Let me hear your advice!
