So I live on a street that is normally very busy during the day, and relatively quiet at night. For the past 3 months my street has been closed as they replace water lines up and down the road. It is likely to be closed for another 3 to 4 weeks.
My concern lies with my 1 cat that is both an outside and inside cat, and kittens that are all relatively tame but were born in two batches, one group were relatively young kittens when the road closed, another was just born at the same time it closed so they've never really known the road as a road.
My cat that goes inside and outside, was always very good about not going to the road in the day time, for years, he'd never go across in the day, I only caught him across the street once ever in the daytime prior to this and that was on Thanksgiving when there was zero road traffic all day, but now he's going outside and just going down there likes theres no issue even in the day time.
The smaller cats will just run into the street and play around the construction equipment like nothing is wrong because they've never really known it as anything else.
Is there anything I can do to get these cats to not go into the street at the very least during the day time when theres higher traffic? I feel like my older cat thats been around for years may adapt back, but I dont know if I really want to risk that because he's hard to catch once he goes outside until he decides he wants to come back in, the kittens will have zero idea of the danger. I cant put a fence up because logistically with how the land is its just not possible, and likely wont stop them anyway.
