is it too soon to put a cat up for adoption?

okay here’s the thing. i live in a house that is on a downhill slope, so my backyard is like a sunken hole that opens up from the park on the street behind my house. (does that make sense?) the bottom line is, if something from the park falls in, it’s essentially trapped until someone from my house lets it out.

there’s a group of cats that likes to hang out by the opening of the sunken hole that is my backyard. they like to walk through the edge, and they go as far as to the neighbors house. they do this most days.

i know who the cats belong to. they live on the house that is just next to the park, but they’re never in the house. theyre always in the park.

as you might have expected, these cats fall into the backyards on my house or my neighbors on occasion. it has happened 3 times in the last months. the last time it happened, my neighbors were out of town and it took 3, 3!!!! whole days for the house behind ours to notice that their (injured!!!) cat had fallen there and do something about it (namely, breaking and entering through my backyard, but eh… don’t tell the police)

a cat fell into my backyard yesterday. it’s raining, there’s no roof, and the cat refuses to let me grab it or eat anything that i offer. which i guess makes sense.

i’ve been posting on the neighborhoods facebook group that i have the cat, and asking for someone to come pick it up since it won’t let me, but no one has claimed the cat.

would i be an asshole if i give it up for adoption? i absolutely refuse to go knock on the owner’s house. they could peek through their window and easily see their cat in my backyard, but it’s been a day now. the poor thing keeps meowing (loudly), so it’s not like it’s not trying to make itself known. also, this has happened before. if my cat went missing, i’d check first on known locations where i’ve found them before, but nothing yet.

i know they’re home. i see the lights on in their house from my own house. they’re just bad owners, in my opinion.

soooo yeah, do i give it up for adoption? should i wait a few more days? i have a dog and a bird, so i can’t keep it here much longer.
