Our two dogs recently went in for their annuals and were offered a "new" drug in place of their normal heartguard medicine. The drug is called Proheart and is a long lasting (6 month) injectable that only cost ~$35 USD, which sounds amazing. But this is actually not a new drug and was actually banned several years ago due to serious reactions including death before making its way back into practice recently, with no apparent change in formula. We sadly had to find this out on our own. One of our two dogs handled it no problem, but the other (who has a history of anaphylactic shock to a vaccine and thus should not have been offered Proheart) has been significantly affected and is quite sick. We are racking up the vet bills with symptomatic treatment and multiple office visits currently. There are numerous cases of the same thing happening (almost identical symptoms) in other pets, again we were not made aware of this, and we are still unsure what the final outcome will be as he has been ill for several days now. I know i am obviously bias, but please read up on this drug before considering it for your pet. Take care.
