Is it ok for me to remove sand from my Russian dwarf hamster's cage entirely?

My dwarf hamster is 1.5 years old now. A few weeks ago, its eye turned blood red (probably an infection) and is now back to normal. I suspect the trigger was the bath sand i put in its cage (the sand is dust free and the same kind has been used for the past 1.5 years, however it may be that some particles irritated the hamster's eye).

Would it be ok if i removed the sand entirely from the cage and just put in normal bedding in little plastic containers? Hamster used to spend a fair amount of time in the sand, but now it's older and just sleeps a lot more. I also don't want his eye to be infected again, it was horrible seeing its red eye. I hope it won't be cruel to let him live out the rest of his days without sand.

Would appreciate input.

Thanks!
