My cat's behavior is deteriorating. I'm seriously close to dropping him off at the local shelter.

I've had my cat since he was a kitten, circa 2012. He was great. Used the litter box, never scratched things up, never made huge messes. And now he does.

We keep him in our basement (it's got four whole rooms, his box, toys, food, everything he needs) when he isn't upstairs with us because he's always been a little obnoxious at night, and this has never been a problem for him. He stays down there at night and comes up during the day because otherwise he'll keep us up all night long, regardless of whether he's in a room with one of us or not, and he's always done that.

Recently he started peeing on the steps. Then on the wall in the basement. Then outside the litter box. Now he's crapping in one of the side bedrooms downstairs. And scratching the hell out of all the doors, to the point where there are shreds of wood all over the carpet. My basement smells like shit. He's constantly doing it, as well as being extremely, extremely obnoxious all the time. Just yelling. Not in pain, or out of need. Just to be obnoxious.

The vet says he's perfectly healthy, same as always. I pretty much can't stand him anymore. He's so destructive, my house smells like piss, he's ruining my carpet and the doors. I now keep him kenneled at night to keep him from destroying everything. I'm starting to really hate him!

He's not bored. Nothing has changed in his life.

Has anybody else had this issue? Is there any way to stop him without outright getting rid of him?
