The advice I hear and read frequently is that the humans should eat before feeding the dogs because it's an opportunity to show that you're number 1 in the house.
But after you've eaten, who do you feed next if you have cats? One of my dogs occasionally growls if a cat walks to close while he's eating, and both dogs before have hovered around me while feeding cats first, and I had to stop them from going at each other (almost as if they were each "resource guarding" the cat food that they were watching me pour but that neither could reach)
