I live in an apartment by myself, just me, my 2 rats, and my cat. My cat is very sweet to every other kind of animal. My old roommate used to have a dog and they got along swell and would play together. When I let my rats out in their play pen my cat is very curious and likes to watch them but is very friendly and sweet with them. Has never showed any sign of wanting to hurt or eat them. I would honestly think she could never hurt a fly if it weren't for the fact that every time shes near another cat she is extremely territorial and almost unrecognizable. I once had to help a friend cat sit while she was out of town and we had to do separate food, water, and litter boxes. When she wouldn't stop hissing, swiping, and running away we decided to close the doors of my apartment so they were sectioned off and she continued to hiss from under the door for the entirety the other cat was there. I can feel her anxiety and its almost like shes a different cat.
Background story of my cat before i got her. I got her when she was an estimated 1 and a half years old. She originally found by my ex's mom outdoors and pregnant. His mom fed her until one day she returned with only 2 kittens. She fed them but when they started to get a older she started not to like them. When it started to get bad she got passed to his aunt, who had 2 other cats. My cat continued to be aggressive with her cats for months until I was in an apartment where I was able to have her, and then I took her in as soon as I could. In the months she spent around other cats, she couldn't get along with them.
Now shes almost 3 and just as aggressive with other cats as ever. I don't really have very many situations where shes around other cats but lately I have really felt the desire to take on another cat from a shelter or rescue. I was wondering if this is something that is perminate in my cat because its how she has always been or if there are things I can do to ease her anxiety and aggression for other cats. I know shes capable of being friendly to other creatures, shes an angel with my pet rats. Any advice would be so so helpful!
Tldr: my cat is aggressive towards other cats, and has always been this way. She used to be wild until she had kittens and got taken in. I got her a year later and she was nice to my old roommates dogs and is very nice to my rats. What can i do to help ease her into a new and I may want to adopt? Is it even possible to do if it has been like this her whole life?
