My cat’s personality has changed

I have two cats, a male and a female. My female cat, Jeff, is a stereotypical cat; doesn’t really enjoy or seek out affection, wants to be left alone to sleep all day and the like. Male cat, Marcie, is pretty much a small dog that meows and is the polar opposite of Jeff. I also have a 1.5 year old son who loves these cats. My son pets and plays very nice with Marcie but he has had very limited experience with Jeff since she stays away from him so much. I always liked that she stayed away and I figured she knew what was best for her.

We’ve made no changes to our daily routine (for cats or babies) but in the last few days Jeff has been VERY different, mostly just affectionate with us. I’ve had both of my cats since they were old enough to come home and I’ve never ever seen her beg for attention until now. She even went up to my son and let him pet her for the first time ever, the petting only stopped when he got bored. Until a few days ago she wouldn’t really accept pets from anyone, she’d allow one or two then walk away (and hide in one of her hiding places). She’s never wanted to sleep with us but she’s spent every night cuddled up next to me since Monday.

When I looked it up a lot of sites just said sudden affection was because of a change in routine or that they need something from me but all I can think of along that line is that both cats sometimes like to go outside and enjoy our patio area. It snowed about 24 inches total this week so obviously kitties are staying inside. They haven’t gone outside much, 4-5 times total in the past few months since it’s been so cold but neither of them have seemed to mind. They don’t scratch the door or anything to try to tell me that’s what they want. Is she just sucking up so one of us will let her outside?
