Need advice. Adopted shelter dog with no training and no socialization.

Hello all,

I need some advice on where to start with my dog. I adopted him a week ago from the humane society. He’s a 2 1/2 year old pit bull/ lab mix. The surrendering owner did just about everything you shouldn’t do with a puppy (left outside all day, didn’t meet other animals or people, not trained). He got adopted and surrendered twice. The shelter eventually had to separate him from the other dogs and put him on a pretty good dose of anti anxiety meds.

He’s a good dog all in all. He loves me and is very protective, but I’m very worried that I won’t be able to give him a comfortable life.

He’s not really trained at all. When I first got him, it seemed all he knew was “sit” and “back up”. He’s now almost completely house broken, and we’ve added a few tricks to his repertoire (lay down, find your bed, settle), but I’m real worried that I’m not doing anything right.

He’s scared of other dogs. He sees a dog, he must bark at it or try to lunge at it. Anything that runs, he must chase. Other people; must be barked at.

He’s not leash trained, so all of these issues are concerning to me, because I can’t properly get him under control when any distractions arise.

We’ve been working on “leave it” and “look at me” so he’ll have something else to focus on, but when it comes time to executing, he won’t listen.

I’m feeling overwhelmed, and I’m scared to death of letting him down.

I greatly appreciate your time, and any advice you may have.

Thank you in advance.
