I don’t really want this to become a relationship advice post, but I think there needs to be some context.
I am a minor. It’s not like I can move out with the cat. As well, my parents are divorced so I am only at my father’s house, with the cat, half the time.
Basically, our cat has been ballooning in size since we adopted him as a kitten. Every time we have gone to the vet we are told he is more and more dangerously overweight. I can’t say the exact weight off the top of my head but he is definitely obese.
We had been feeding him with an always-replenished bowl, and I decided I wanted to help this poor cat be healthy. I weighed him and calculated how much food he needs each way to have a safe calorie deficit. He is fed a weight loss cat food, but if he is given infinite amounts of it it doesn’t do anything. I then started feeding him that amount, but my father would fill it back up to the top because “he’s starving!” As well, I can’t exactly stop him from doing what he wants when I’m not there. I gave him a cup with the correct amount marked so it’s not like it’s much work measuring it.
The next time I came over, I found this device in the basement that we used when we were on vacation. Basically there are 5 different compartments with food in them, and it turns to expose a different one each day. I would fill them up before I left his house. He would not have to lift a finger. It worked for a while until my dad started taking the top off so all 5 were exposed. This is probably even worse than the original bowl, and is what’s happening now.
So, Reddit, what do I do? Whether it’s something to help convince him or something technical I can do, anything helps.
