Hello everyone. Recently I adopted a brother and sister kitten pair whomst were strays found when they were young (I forgot, maybe it was 1-2 months old). They are now about 8 months old and we've had them for 3 weeks.
The brother is fine and sleeps with us now, but the sister WILL NOT let us pet her at all. The foster parent (who has fostered about 50 cats over the years) said she had been that way since they found her and have tried lots of things but insisted that food would be the way to her heart. I've had 6 cats over my life, two which we found in our barn as several-week-old babies, and my girlfriend has had over 20 cats, but neither of us has ever had such a skiddish cat.
I she sees us moving in to pet her, she will start to back away immediately. We started giving her treats and she will stretch her neck as far as possible to reach it and then run away. If the food is in our lap then she will veeerryy slowly move up to it and then we must be absolutely still or she will jump; one time she just looked at us and appeared to think "it's just not worth it" so we stopped doing that.
Anyways I know she's very young and she'll probably get better, but I'm worried she will be skiddish forever if we don't teach her while she's young. It's sad when the brother is purring and rubbing on us, having a good ol' time and she watches us meowing from a distance appearing to want to get in on it but too scared to approach.
Also I want to clarify that she is not afraid of him. They are bonded, play together and sleep together (sometimes). They don't fight at all or appear to dislike each other.
If anyone has any other suggestions I would like to know. Thank you.
