First cat adjusting question.

So I just picked up my new buddy yesterday. He is hiding under the couch in my apartment right now. Where it's the weekend, and especially with covid, I'm going to be here quite a lot for the next couple days.

I feel like as long as I'm in the apartment he's just going to stay there. Should I leave my apartment for an hour or two and hopefully he'll explore a bit more?

I keep getting conflicting advice. Some people are telling me to just ignore him and let him adjust in his own time. Some people say I should lie in front of the couch and talk to him and coax him with treats.

When I went to bed last night I heard him drink water, and I saw he ate some food (I left some food out because he just stayed in one spot last night when I got home), and he did use his litterbox.
