My husband and I took in a foster dog and told the rescue up front that it would only be a couple of weeks because we had travel planned. (We're not covidiots -- we live in one of the few covid-free countries.) The rescue is paying to board her otherwise, and she wasn't gaining weight in the kennel/getting hot spots, so they were happy to find a foster home.
We're back for a couple of weeks before another trip. We're willing to take the dog back while we're here, but would that be better or worse for her? She escaped the kennel and ran straight to our house while we were gone.
If we don't take her back, her time in a house with a nice bed will become a fading memory. If we do, we probably reset the clock and the next time she's at the kennel, she may escape again wanting to come back to our house or develop separation issues. But we'd also get to put some weight back on her and give her some love. She seemed very happy here.
She's a super sweet dog and we're happy to have her here but we want to do what's right for her state of mind. (No, we can't adopt her at this point.)
