How do you make the decision for expensive surgery?

My mom recently found out our 7 year old family dog has gallbladder mucoceles and would need to have her gallbladder removed. The vet says that it is not a case of will something happen but when and so she should get surgery to remove her gallbladder. This surgery costs $6,000 though which is quite expensive and I know my parents don't really have this kind of money. Our first dog also died rather suddenly due to a medical condition and it was very traumatic for our family in the moment.

You want to do everything you can for your pets because they are family, but if people don't have the money, it just seems so cruel to have to make that choice. Our plan is to put the cost on credit cards and pay that down to make it easier. It is just very sad that people have to make these kinds of decisions for their little loved ones.
