I moved into my boyfriends 5th wheel 5 months ago. He has a cat, Luna, and I moved in my cat, Bites. They are the same age at 2 years old. Luna is an anxious cat, dumb as a rock, super sweet, not very energetic, and has weight problems. Bites is polar opposite, super playful and energetic, and in the past has done really well with other cats. Luna has had two experiences w other cats when she was a kitten and I think the older cats were mean to her.
We have a catio (Luna wants to be an outside cat but she is legitimately too dumb and my boyfriend doesn’t want to put her at risk) so that was the compromise. 3 litter boxes. Multiple cat condos and shelves up high dedicated to them.
It has been an extremely slow process getting the cats to get along. We did the whole slow introduction TWICE, keeping separate, letting them smell each other’s scents, feeding together, feliway, etc. Every time they’re near each other Luna won’t stop hissing and growling and when she starts bites does anything he can to attack her. And when he has attacked her it’s bad, like hair ripping out, cats screaming, face scratches, and Luna poops her self.
He has never been this aggressive in the past and we seem to not be getting anywhere. We spray him if he is trying to get at her and spray her when she growls but it seems to do nothing. When we let them be in the same room it’s generally fine if she’s up high and he’s on the ground but if we look away he starts being obsessive about getting to her.
The thing is, we live in a 5th wheel. Bites has to be put up in the bed room and we let him out when we put Luna outside or on the shelves we built for them. It’s unfair for Bites to be stuck in a tiny room all the time but I don’t understand why they won’t stop fighting. Luna can’t be in the bed room at all because she pisses in the bed every single time she’s in there.
Recently it seemed like things were a bit better, they could be in the same room (him on the ground and her up high) and they didn’t pay too much attention to each other. Then in the past two days he started getting obsessive and she started growling again. Tonight all seemed fine and then nope, he somehow parkoured up to her and they got into a nasty fight.
It’s actually starting to drive me nuts and I’ve been crying constantly because I feel like they can’t live together. They can’t even come close to being peaceful. It’s getting in the way of my relationship because I can’t stand to keep Bites locked up in a tiny room (I’m scared of him getting depressed and he hates being in there) and I can’t stand to see Luna attacked. I told my boyfriend that I feel like I’m going to have to move out if they can’t get along and it’s creating animosity between us.
I just need some advice, I genuinely don’t know what else to try.
