I adopted my one year old cat Damian in November while living with my family. I was waiting for my SO to get a job so I could move out with him but given the current economy it took longer than we thought. So Damian grew accustomed to my parent’s house over the last few months.
My parent’s house is huge. Over 5000 sqft and three floors. Lots of space for Damian to run and hide and he’s a very active cat. His favorite place to chill was at the top of the stairs looking down into the living room. And he LOVED chasing me as I pulled a wand or string while running up and down both stairs. He also seemed to love visiting all my family members in their rooms through the day.
This weekend I moved with him into my new apartment. It’s a 900 sqft 2 bed 2 bath. So not a small apartment but a huge downgrade from the house. To make things worse, I have very little furniture currently so the living area only has his cat tree and a few boxes.
I’ve tried running around the apartment with his favorite string toys but he’s just not that interested :( I feel so sad thinking about how homesick and bored he must be. I’m planning to get more furniture, including cat window perches, but am worried he’ll always dislike this place. He can’t even sleep on the bed with me anymore since my SO is allergic.
Is there anything I can do to make him feel better during this transition? How can I tell if he’s actually unhappy?
