Hi, I suppose this post is also for a bit of stress relief but I would love any advice at all.
I woke up this morning to my roommate telling me that our front door was open and probably had been for a few hours, cause he went to smoke and wasn’t paying attention. He told me that he tried to look for my cat and wasn’t able to find her at all. So we searched the apt and she wasn’t there and at 5:30am we started wandering the streets to look for her. I live in Queens, NY so I am very nervous about her right now. I put out some food and water outside my door and a little bit of tuna since it smells more. It’s 8am now and he went to go print out posters that I made. She isn’t microchipped because I thought she had to be older to be chipped but after a Google search it said she could have been from as young as two months. I wish my vet had told me from the monthly visits I’ve been doing but I suppose I’m the one to blame for not researching further.
She has always expressed interest in going outside and I take her for walks in a backpack so I don’t think she’ll be entirely unfamiliar with my place. But I am very worried because she’s so young and I feed her three times a day so she’s probably hungry right now but we haven’t found her at all. She knows her name but she won’t come when called. When I shake the treat bag she won’t come if she’s not feeling up for it so I don’t know how to call for her. We also live in between a very trafficked area which also means a lot of loud sounds that she really doesn’t like. I suppose the highlight is that she has a distinct face that is easily recognizable and since she’s smaller than an adult cat then I could see her if she comes out in the open but thats also easier to over look. She is really friendly towards people too but that’s also in our apt, I don’t know about a new environment. She doesn’t have a collar on cause I have tried multiple times but she always gets it stuck in her jaw and can’t get out so I temporarily gave up but I should have worked harder at getting her used to it. I just can’t stand to see her hurt herself.
I’ve left the door cracked open so I can hear her if she starts eating the food or she could hopefully come back inside on her own. But I imagine that if anyone finds her they’ll just assume she’s a stray. I am going to call all the shelters and rescue groups nearby once they open and put posters up at the vets and on every conceivable place I can. I don’t know though. I’m just panicking and feeling a lot of different emotions right now but I know that I won’t ever stop looking for her.
If you read all this then thank you and if have any advice please tell me.
Edit** I suppose I should also mention that she was born outside in upstate ny with a stray mother. She and her siblings lived under a family friends porch for the first two months of her life. So it’s not like she’s unfamiliar with the outdoors but the countryside is very different from a city.
