My cat is too protective of her sister

I adopted bonded sister cats Kiwi and Berry from the shelter five years ago. They are beloved members of our family.

These cats are well behaved 99% of the time. The only problem we have is that Berry is overly protective of her sister Kiwi. She will attack when she feels Kiwi is threatened.

Yesterday Berry took things too far. My mom was over visiting and encroached Kiwi's space. This caused Kiwi to hiss and swipe. Berry saw from a distance and instantly lunged at my mom. She ATTACKED. Berry scratched my mom's ear and bit my mom three times. There was quite a bit of blood and my mom was hysterical (rightfully so). We had to bring my mom to urgent care to get checked out and get antibiotics. Thankfully my mom is okay, but this situation has us all shaken up and wondering what to do about this behavior.

Aside from protecting her sister, Berry is an absolute sweetheart. She loves to cuddle and is super sociable. She doesn't show any signs of aggression outside of these unique situations of protecting her sister.

Has anyone else seen this with bonded siblings? Any tips for how we can prevent this type behavior in the future? Biting and scratching our guests is absolutely not okay.
