I have a very energetic 6 month orange tabby male cat! I’ve had him for over three months now. I don’t mind when he sits on the couch. He enjoys naps there and likes to sit perched at the back of the couch. It’s also sweet when he cuddles with me on my lap.
My issue is that when he gets his bursts of energy, he loves to run on the couches, ricochet his body off it, climb it and jump from couch to couch. He also occasionally scratches at the side (working on that with more scratch pads). This has caused the couch to become ruined with a lot of threads being pulled up all over the couch.
It’s a really old couch so I can overlook it but I’ll be moving in five months and want to spend good money on a couch. So I can’t have the same thing happening.
What is the best course of action here? I feel like there’s no way to teach him that resting on the couch is okay but running and jumping on the couch is not.
I hate to take away one of his favorite nap spots but he has a cat hammock that he loves and also spends a lot of time napping in. He loves to sit/nap on the couch when I’m on it
Should I get a cat tower for his jumping needs and make the couch completely off limits?
Or do you think this behavior will stop as he gets older as he calms down so he’ll stop playing on the couch? (SN: he’s currently not neutered but we have an appt in a month)
Any advice will be helpful! Thank you!
