Older cat behavioural changes

For a bit of background, my cat is 12 years old and we got her when she was a kitten. She was pregnant pretty young (probably just under a year old) and she only had a single kitten rather than a litter before she was spayed. When the kitten was old enough, we gave him to our grandparents to look after and he's been thriving there ever since. We also got another cat about 8 years ago and they never really got along but they have a certain understanding.

Recently she's been walking around and calling out to her kittens despite the fact that she never showed affection to him when he was born and hasn't seen him in about a decade. Is this just a plea for attention from an older, more dependant cat or is she having some sort of emotional problem after being separated from her child?

Any input would be appreciated!

Edit: The second I brought her onto my knee and started stroking her, she stopped meowing so I'm thinking this is just a plea for attention.
