I want to adopt a cat but know nothing about the costs of having an animal, my parents never wanted one growing up. I’m currently a college student and spend a lot of time by myself especially bc of covid, and I think adopting a cat would make me happier and feel less lonely.
I found one at my local humane society that is 13 years old with FIV. I am financially stable enough to afford a cats basic needs and annual vet check ups, however since he is an older cat would it cause more potential problems requiring vet visits? I cannot afford 2-3k emergency vet visits if needed, I’m not that financially stable of a college student. I plan on calling the humane society to ask about his health and potential future health problems but I’m not sure. I also plan on getting pet health insurance if I can find one on the cheaper side but has a moderate amount of coverage.
I also prefer an older cat but I’m just not sure with all the possible health issues that may come from one. Plus I know it is pretty common for male cats to pee on furniture, which is another thing I’m worried about with that cat being in a new environment, will he pee all over the place??
I’ve been doing a ton of research and feel comfortable enough to adopt a cat, the only thing stopping me is the possible costly vet bills. Please help me decide whether this is a good choice or not. I’ve been wanting a cat for a while and feeling ready to finally go through with it.
