Strongly considering adopting a kitten, but I have a small dog. Need advice

Hi all! First, I'm on mobile so apologies for the format.

I have an 10 year old Chihuahua mix (we think she is probably half Russel). She's got only 14 teeth left after a surgery for a dental infection, and no history of biting people or animals. She doesn't necessarily like anybody or any animal she doesn't know, but she gets over it rather quickly. Animals take a little longer, she once had to stay with 3 other small dogs and they did NOT get along at first, but after a full day she calmed down.

She's not aggressive, as I mentioned she has never biten any one or any animal she's been around. However, she is very protective and a bit jealous (I have a chinchilla and whenever I bring him out she whines). We have a big crate for her whenever we let out chinchilla out so she doesn't bother him. She just barks and cries, but she has never attacked any animal or my chinchilla. Sometimes if she is out she will run up on him, but may just sniff him and whine.

My friend recently had kittens and I've always wanted a cat. We have a second bedroom that I would keep her in for awhile (been reading up a bit on this) and I know I would have to ease into introducing her to my dog. Does anyone have any experience, recommendations or advice on this? I really want to adopt this kitty, but want to make sure I'm prepared and make good decisions. Thanks!
