TL;DR I'm involved with a spat with my Uncle over care of the household cat. As I out more care into the cat I bekuv3 I have a larger say in his well being.
I currently live with my Uncle until the end of the month. Months ago he was given a cat by his girlfriend. As I understand the story he was found in a box and just taken from there. My Uncle accepted him to deal with mice.
Once I got into the picture I noticed the cat was exhibiting some poor behaviors due to not being raised (scratching where he shouldn't, biting everything.) I worked with he cat and was able to get him to use a scratch post and cease biting hands. This is when I learned my uncle refuses to take the cat to the vet (long story.)
Fast forward to now. The cat is getting vaccinated and spayed thanks to me and all on my own dime. I'm getting his food and his litter. I'm cleaning and feeding both. I'm working with him everyday with play time and general well being. My uncle on the other hand likes to kick him outside if the cat starts meowing. Even after doing so resulted in the cat getting hurt and a large vet bill on my end.
My uncle and I have fought over the care. My argument being I'm putting in the effort necessary to take care of him and I would like to take him with me to my new place. Him saying it is his cat and he can do whatever he wants with it. He then verbatim said he does not care if it ends up dead outside.
With me being the sole caretaker at this point and the only one involved with the vet, who qualifies under ownership of the animal?
