So I have a 3 y/o American bully female and she has a history of "sensitive skin". She gets rashes on her belly every once in awhile from grass or other things. Well, this past Sunday she got a rash under her fur all around her hindquarters area. We knew it was an allergic reaction so we wiped her down with baby wipes and gave her Benadryl as per usual, but this rash was persisting. We were going a bit crazy trying to figure out what she was having a reaction to. Nothing in the house was new, not any laundry detergent, cleaning supplies or dog food. My bf started wondering is it was the dog shampoo as we had just given her a bath, but it was the same we'd always used and it had never given her a reaction before. We were about to change her food or take her to the vet when lo and behold we discovered the cause!
Fleas. Mother effin fleas. We didn't think of it bc not only is it winter, but she and her sister get regular flea medication. Yet there they were little black bugs hopping about in her fur. Ran to the store and got flea shampoo, gave her a good scrubbing and a dose of flea medication/Benadryl along with cleaning the house/washing blankets and such. This morning when we got up we saw the rash is finally subsiding. :D If she hadn't had a reaction to the fleas who knows how long it would have been before we realized she and her sister were infested. So silver lining?
Anyway thought I'd share in case anyone else ever has a situation that's similar. Check for fleas!
