Cat peeing on the rug

Hi all! I'm Aztela.

I have a relatively new cat that we got this year. I don't know her breed specifically. However, within the past few months an issue came to light: she started using the carpet we have in the dining room for some litter box usage instead of the litter boxes we have.

It isn't common that she does it. At most, it's once a day in the morning. Sometimes it's urine, sometimes it's feces.

I'm wondering what I should do to get her to stop using the rug as a toilet. By the time I get up, the mess is usually cleaned up and I hear about it from my mom.

My current solution has been to bring her over, hold her in a way that she's looking at the mess, and tell her "no" sternly multiple times before letting her go.

All I ask is for nothing that relates to harming her in any way. My grandpa would hit his dogs to behave when I was younger and the last thing I want to ever do is harm her.

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: The current solution has been one my mom has been doing. At night, my mom takes the cat and throws her out onto the deck (where there is a litter box) and keeps her locked out there for the night. However, the issue is the deck is not the most well built, and water really easily leaks in, making it soaked. For instance, there's usually a massive puddle in the middle of the floor. It's starting to get much colder, and with rain and snow, I don't want her to be stuck out in the freezing cold and all wet. I'm completely against this but my mom refuses to let me bring her back in, saying something like, "She's a cat, cats are fine outside and in the cold."
