Cat vanishing after looking sick.

Hi,

i got pretty harshly rebuffed on /askvet so maybe here i can talk about this. (Thanks reddit.)

i have a rather serious question, im not seeking advice i just hope someone does have an explanation.

English is not my first language so pls. excuse if something is not clear.

My cat, that i inherited from my mom is missing since yesterday. So i am not experienced with cats, i always had dogs. I have a flat in the same building and we kind of shared custody. My mom died some weeks ago and since then i cared for him. He was an out-door cat.

He was ok all day and then at the evening he somehow cowered all the time, hid under things and generally avoided contact. I decided to bring him to the vet the nxt morning, he hid under my bed and i looked after him every 30min. He did not seem to be in pain as i could pick him up, pet him and "poke" him everywhere, his legs seemed to be fine too. I had the feeling he was nauseous, but he was attentive when i spoke to him so i didn't go to sleep and watched him every now and then.

I did not close the cat door (this will always haunt me if....) because i thought if he is sick he wont go out. And when i went looking after him late at night he was gone.

I searched the whole house several times and then took a flashlight and searched the garden and nearby street, i live in a rural town and when he was healthy i knew him to stay pretty near to the house as he always came when i whistled.

The night he went missing it was raining and about 10° C.

Im expecting the worst and actually have already lost hope in seeing him again, he was never gone for more than a few hours. I know that cats hide when they are really sick but would a cat really go this far away out of a heated home into a rainy night to die outside?

As i said im not seeking for help, not much i can do at this point...just wait. But as this is my first cat i can't understand this behaviour, i searched the whole house but im still frightened that he may have hidden somewhere where i can't find him, or maybe he is lying somewhere outside......

The houses next to us are not occupied all the time, they belong to people that use them as weekend/vacation homes so i cant ask them to look for him there, i looked into their garden and called for him (normally he does react to that and comes.) I ran around shaking his box of treats wich is a sure way to get him to react. (i knew he wont be interested in that if he is really sick)
