My partner and I are currently overseas (Australia ➡️ USA) visiting family. We have a lovely pair of housesitters taking care of our two (now one) greyhounds in our home for the three weeks we are away. Unfortunately, we received word a few days ago that our sweet 12-year old grey wasn't able to get up one morning. We agreed vet care was immediately required and they took her in straight away. The vet gave us a few likely causes, and the option for invasive exploratory surgery and super expensive scans. He said that her pain was being managed, but that basically there were issues somewhere in the spine causing paralysis to her hind limbs. We were heartbroken, but decided that given her age, the pain and rehab associated with surgery was not a humane option. He did suggest that she stay overnight one more night to see if the strong anti-inflammatory drugs made any difference and we immediately agreed. However, when we called the next day there was no change.
We decided to put her to sleep after consulting with the vet and the housesitters, even though we knew there was no way to make it back in time. This decision was incredibly difficult, and I can't shake this horrible guilt that we basically abandoned our sweet, beautiful girl in her last moments. She had the vet staff (who we've been seeing for years), the housesitters and our other grey there...but I just feel terrible. We had an amazing eight years with her, but weren't there in the end.
Has anyone else had to do something similar?
