I spent 4+ years calling a male parakeet a female. The pet store said he was a female and he looked female. He always acted like a male parakeet but I chocked it up to females imitating males in the absence of males... But then I read up on mutations and it turns out that recessive pied males don't have blue ceres like most males. They have some sort of purplish pink cere.
I still call him female 75% of the time and he's kept his name. He's a bird, he doesn't care about pronouns and names.
