I’ve never had an ant problem in our apartment before. I’ve also never had a cat before! I now have the sweetest four month old little guy and after only two weeks he’s already the light of my life.
Anyways, almost every day when I wake up or come home from work I find ants in his food and water. I feel so bad because I’m sure he doesn’t like it and just wants to eat in peace...
• I read about putting water in a baking/casserole dish and putting the bowls in the water to drown the ants. My cat likes to drink the water in the dish instead of his bowl, so the water is gone and ants come back.
• I also read about using essential oils (diluted!!) to deter the ants, but as a first-time cat owner I’m also really nervous to try that out because I read conflicting advice that states essential oils can be toxic to cats.
• The current method I’m trying is Vaseline. I found some articles that said ants can’t get through petroleum jelly and it is not dangerous for cats. I have a feeding mat underneath his bowls, so I put a light layer of Vaseline on the mat, focusing on the edges, and a light layer around the edges of the bowls too. I haven’t seen any ants since, but also I only did that a couple of hours ago. Even if it works, I’m not sure that’s a great long-term solution.
I feel like there has to be something better out there.
If anyone has other solutions, please give them to me! Also if I am doing anything I shouldn’t be, let me know! I want to be the best mama to my little guy and I just want him happy and comfortable and healthy.
Thanks everyone!
