Oh my goodness I’m so angry. I hope this is not the same story in other cities but here where I live (southern city In the US) if you find a stray, you’re basically screwed.
Let me explain. We found a baby black stray kitten. This thing was TINY. We found her in a McDonald’s parking lot behind the garbage. Us trying to be good people took her and brought her home and cleaned her up a little bit. The next day we took her to our local humane society.
Worker: “Sorry we don’t accept black cats” Me: “I’m sorry?” Worker: “yeah we don’t accept black cats” Me: “umm ok... well we can’t keep her we are both allergic and have a dog, what do you suggest” Them: “Try animal services which is down the road”
Long story short we drove there but they only do surrenders on certain WEEKDAYS 1-5PM. Any normal person works during that time. After a week of trying to keep her fed and entertained and not getting killed by our dog, we ended up finding a nice lady who loves black kittens who took her.
Story #2: We found a puppy behind a dumpster a couple days ago. To make another long story short, the humane society won’t accept him because they “focus on Injured and abused animals” and animal services is at full capacity and won’t accept him. Even if either place was accepting, they both charge a $25 surrender fee. And yes according to them a stray surrender is still a “owner surrender.” So not only do you have to take off work, you have to pay $25 just for being a good person. And an even bigger middle finger to you if you find anything on the weekend because you have to wait until the weekday to surrender.
