I have a 10 month old lab/retriever mix. We got here m from the ASPCA in July. He is active and loves to run around my backyard. But where I'm having problems is his chewing. I know his set of breeds are chewers so we have a kong rubber bone that he loves, we are on nyla bone number 2, and he has a bison rib bone he tears up.
When we are outside he grabs a stick and starts chewing. And not just to be destructive, he eats them. Then he grabs pecans. Fresh pecans, old pecans, he doesn't care, straight down the gullet they go. Usually before we can take them away. I'm sure that can't be healthy.
Now he has progressed from cowering when we tell him no, and try to take them away, to running away and acting like it's a game. We try to be stern with our tone of voice, and he ignores it.
He can't be hungry, because we just increased his dinner from two scoops to three. And he does this minutes after dinner. It doesn't matter what time it is, if he's outside he's chewing on sticks or pecans or rocks or cat shit, or dead leaves, he doesn't care.
How can I break him of this chewing/eating habits?
