Hi all. Last Friday I adopted a kitten (Oreo, cutest thing ever, I'm in love. He was rescued from the streets when he was abour 3 months old and had been in foster care since). He's 4-5 months old and very timid. I set up my master bathroom to be his "safe space" and he's got water in there, toys, scratch post, the little box, he already found a spot where he can hide if he wants to feel safe, everything is going well. We already had a 6 years old lab that has been very curious about him and we've been working on training the dog to calm down near the kitty. Oreo has been confined in the bathroom basically since he got here, with occasional visits to our living room so he can have his meals next to our dog. During the day I make visits to his bathroom (it' his now, I lost it), I have a pillow in there for me to sit which is close to his hiding place. I come in and sit and I just stay there looking at my phone, or trying to call his attention but not pushing anything. I also every now and then bring a little treat for him so he can understand it's safe to come close. Some times he comes to me in my visits, he asks for pets, we have our "purr&pets&muchlove sessions" for 20-30 minutes and yesterday he even sat on my lap a couple of times (which I MELTED almost literally, I was not expecting that to happen so soon); but some other times he doesn't really care and just stays in his hiding place. Oreo is my very first cat in life, so my question is: am I doing this right? I know cats are very different from dogs, and I think from a training my dog standpoint and getting them both used to each other, things are progressing but I can't stop thinking about Oreo in his confinement and if he's feeling accepted here. Any help/input would be greatly appreciated!
