Hey, reddit, something strange is happening with my dog and the shelter keeping him. Before I begin to recount what happened, the major thing here is that this is a 'no kill' shelter. Ok so:
My dog ran away two days ago and was hit by a car. That night, I went to an emergency hospital and they told me had had a pulminary contusion and pneumothorax, the good news is that there is no fracture. I can't pay for it since it happened very suddenly and I don't get paid until Friday. They tell me I can just leave him there and that they would take him to the shelter the next day, and I could go there to pay.
The next day, I go to the shelter and things start being weird. The shelter tells me that my dog is in 'critical condition' and that I would need to pay them to take my dog and set up an appointment. Later in the conversation I ask the lady how my dog was doing, and she tells me she doesn't know because she can't read charts. Then I ask her what she meant by 'critical condition' and she says that the veteran 'sounded critical'.
Finally, today. I go to the shelter again and they tell me my dog has a fracture and a collapsed lung. Say his condition is critical and that he's currently in different location. I ask if I could see him at the other place he's in, and the lady tells me 'no, not even the people there can go see him now because his condition is very serious'.
Then she tells me that if I can't pay them right there and set up an appointment, they will euthanize my dog. Just as I'm signing the papers to surrender my dog, a lady brings my dog in. My dog, who's supposed to be in an entirely different location. He does have a couple of areas shaved on his back, but he's wagging his tail and even jumps up on me. He spends time walking around the area, sniffing at everything, and other than a couple of coughs, looks completely healthy.
At this point, I have no idea what's going on. Did the lady give me another dog's file? Why was her diagnosis so different from the one in the emergency room where a veterinarian told me he had no fracture and only had bruising in his lungs.
I've already set up an appointment with another vet and will pay the shelter, but this whole experience has been extremely stressful. Does anyone know if it's common for shelters to get information wrong?
