I have two cats. Indy who is a year and a half, male neutered and Randy, who is about 6 months and neutered male too. I rescued Randy about 2 months ago. They somewhat get on but I’m oh so confused about their behaviour. They have meals facing each other and within a few feet with no problems at all. They have both slept on me and chill on the sofa within a literal feet of each other and have no problem. But two or three times a day for the past week, Indy will just go for Randy. At first it was just a few swipes nothing too serious but yesterday there was quite a spat and Randy got a scratch on his face that drew a bit of blood.
When Indy goes for Randy, it’s usually cause they don’t know one of them is coming round the corner or one of them runs across this room. There isn’t a lot of hissing and there never used to be any chasing but now there is. I make a clap of my hands or a loud noise to get them to stop and then I separate them for a bit. After a while they’re usually fine. When Indy goes for Randy, his ears aren’t down, his back isn’t arched and he doesn’t hiss or growl. Almost as if he’s play hunting? Indy has never been round another cat so is he just unsocialized? I give them treats when they’re both being chill with one another and when food is involved, they’re almost like best of friends. No angry play at all. Indy has even reached out and gently touched Randy when we’ve been chilling on the couch.
Do I need to reintroduce? Keep them seperate for a while? Is this just normal cat behaviour? Or am I just being a shit cat parent?
