My cats a little piglet. There's no way I would feel comfortable free feeding her, as I think she wouldn't actually be able to regulate her appetite and ultimately end up overeating. However, I might have found a way to get her to have food all-day/half of the day without it actually being more...and I just want to hear if anyone has any qualms or negative experiences about this method I'll be testing.
I just picked up my two-year-old girl from the shelter, and I'm pretty lucky in the sense she is by no means a picky eater. So I've been having fun giving her different types of flavors of wet cat food, sometimes adding an egg yoke to her food, mixing wet and dry food, sometimes adding a little bit of plain yogurt to her food, you get the idea. I was always adding a splash of water to her food though. Since cats are pretty notorious for not drinking enough water and in the wild, they get most of there water through there pray.
So I tried out soaking a cup of Tiki Cat dry kibble with a cup of water overnight. Naturally, it expanded to nearly twice it's the size. There was still some water left over, but that was fine because I added some wet food to the puffed kibble and made a gravy out of the remaining water while mixing it in. I then warmed it in the microwave so it wasn't so cold because my cat's spoiled. I was pleased because she drank up all her gravy first. She tends to do that regardless if it was soaked or not, but I'm glad she gets that boost of hydration. And it seemed like she had food ALL DAY. This was nice for me because she wasn't begging for food every time I went to the kitchen since she already had a partially filled dish. I think the food was just so filling for her she couldn't eat her regular amount of food in one sitting. So she broke it up throughout the day. She did end up finishing it, it just took like the entire day.
Sooo according to the Tiki Cat nutrition label, less than a half cup should be plenty for her size, so the puffed full cup of kibble was way overkill - oops. She's not a very big cat, only 6lbs. So I'll def scale it back the next time so I don't turn my little piglet into a big piggy.
