First time adopting cat

My S.O and I are adopting our first adult cat tomorrow. We've never owned a cat before but my partner has been around them his whole life. We have all the toys and care items a cat might need. The cat we're adopting is one of our neighbors whose moving and can't take her with them. I was doing a bit of reading and everywhere says the cat will need a safe space. I live in a fairly quiet 1 bedroom/ 1 bathroom apartment, that is roughly 450sqft. Both the current owner and myself live in the same type of apartment layout just reversed. We have an open concept living room and kitchen, a bedroom, and a bathroom. The bathroom is quite small and probably not suitable for a safe space, and the bedroom is where my S.O and I sleep. Where do we have her safe space? Should we give her the bedroom and my partner and I sleep in the living room? I don't want to overwhelm her and I want her to have a smooth transition.
