Getting a dog with potential to go back into the office

I want a dog more than anything and have for over a year now. I am pretty seriously looking at adopting a 7-8 month old lab mix who is currently 27 pounds. I currently live in an apartment with a roommate and her cat and work from home for now. I have determined that I would be a great fit for this dog in terms of activity level, size, cat, etc., but am anxious about what will happen with her once I go back to the office regularly. If I decide to get her, I will likely crate train her and get her used to being alone in the crate in another room while I’m working to hopefully curb some separation anxiety. However, I don’t love the idea of leaving her crated the whole time I’m at work. I’m not sure when I’ll be asked to come back into the office, but I want to be sure she is happy and safe even when I’m not home. Is this irresponsible and not nice for the dog? I’m sure I’m not the only person in this situation...
